The Innocent by Michelle K. Pickett @JGBookSolutions @michelle_kp

Welcome!!  Thanks so much for taking time out for this short Q&A! I'm excited that you're visiting :)

Hi, Laurie! Thank you so much for hosting me today! I’m both excited that The Innocent has released, and saddened. It’s more than likely that The Innocent will be the last book in the Milayna Series. So I’ve had two series’ end in as many month: The PODs Series in October and the Milayna Series in November. It’s hard saying goodbye to characters I’ve spent time with for so long.

What would we find under your bed?

Well, my bed is inhabited by two horrible, horrible things. Dust bunnies and “skinny” (as in I need to stop eating chocolate and drop a size or two) clothes.

Tell us about your favorite restaurant.

Okay, this is a funny question because I hate to cook. I mean, I’ll scrub a toilet over cooking. So basically any restaurant that does the cooking is my favorite.

There are three funny things about my aversion to cooking. First, I collect cookbooks. I have about thirty. Yes, seriously. I even read the cookbooks… but don’t cook the recipes. Second, I love to watch cooking shows. Chopped and Hell’s Kitchen, especially. And finally, if I ever do wander into that big black hole known as my kitchen (which I do… occasionally), my husband always loves what I cook. Or says he does. So it boils down to this: I am a really good cook that hates to cook, but watches cooking shows and collects cookbooks.

Okay, back to the question. I love anything seafood and Mexican. I generally head for the mom and pop owned restaurants. If you live in (or have visited) the Houston/Tomball area, one of my family’s favs is Goodson’s Restaurant.

If I came to visit early in the morning would you impress me as being more like a chirpy bird or a grumpy bear?

Usually a grumpy bear. Although lately I’ve been carving out a regular work schedule which involves me getting up (like dressed and everything) at 6 am and I’ve slowly begun to adjust. But, I’m still grumpy until the first shot of caffeine takes effect. So when you come visit, bring caffeine and oatmeal.

Describe what it’s like to be an author in three words.

It’s my dream.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I am a horrible speller. Horrible. Spell check tells me regularly that I’ve spelled a word so wrong that it can’t even guess what word it is.

You just won a huge lottery what is the first thing you'll buy?

A house with an office! A huge one that can fit hundreds of books. Then, I’d go buy hundreds and hundreds of books!

Actually, I’d be more likely to pay off bills and set up college funds for my kids before I made any big purchases. After that was done, then my husband and I would probably buy a house and take a really long vacation.

Do you have a favorite quote, quip, or saying? What is it?

I found one when I was writing Unspeakable: Life is the art of drawing without an eraser (unknown). I like that. It reminds me that the choices I make are irreversible. I can’t unsay something, or conversely, say something that should have been said. I can’t reverse a decision. Once it has been made, even if I change my mind later, it effects areas of my life, and the lives of those I love.

But, even though that quote reminds me to be cautious in my words and actions, I also think it tells us not to be scared. Yes, we are told there is no eraser, but life is also called “art.” And to create great art, one needs to be fearless.

Excerpt from The Innocent by Michelle K. Pickett:

“So, how’s school?” Grams asked. Her gaze searched mine.
“Good. I like it, but I think I’m going to take the rest of the semester off.”
My grandmother frowned. “It’s your first semester.” She studied me for a minute. “Something’s wrong. The boy?”
I nodded. “I miss him.”
“Mm-hmm. Yes, I know that. But I didn’t mean that boy. I meant the other one.” She looked at Benjamin, who was happily building houses with his Legos only to crush them with his cars.
I nodded.
“I had a feeling. What do you see, child?” She rolled her wheelchair closer to me and leaned forward.
“Azazel and—”
“Four men?”
“Yeah, how’d you know?” I asked slowly.
“They’re the Four Brothers. They were above Abaddon.”
“The Four Brothers?”
She ticked their names off on her fingers. “Yann, Brann, Jord, and Himmel. The Four Brothers. They’re nasty, Milayna. If they’re helping Azazel, you’re going to have one helluva fight on your hands.”
Shit on a stick. I don’t like that answer. Let’s try for another one.
I glanced at Ben, and then back to my grams. “Why now? Why are they showing up now?”
“You’re stronger. You were able to outwit Azazel, which was bad, but not devastating because they had Abaddon, and he could still kill you. But you up and put a wrench in their plans when you killed him. Essentially, you killed your own assassin. You took out their back-up plan. So they’re coming to take care of the problem themselves.”
“And Azazel? What does he have to do with this?” I asked.
A shiver ran down my spine and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up like little soldiers.

“That’s easy, Milayna. He’s coming for Benjamin.”
