The Resistance (The Bionics book 2) by Alicia Michaels: Spotlight with Excerpt

What was one of the most surprising things you learned while writing your books?
I learned that my mind can take me to some pretty dark places. I’m generally a light, happy person, but for some reason The Bionics series has brought out my dark side. In order to write dystopia, you have to be able to go to a place in your mind where every horrible thing that could ever happen to a society is possible. And you have to drag your characters through that mud in order to make them shine. I think I surprised myself with how far I’m willing to go to get them to a certain place by the end.

What do you think makes a good story?
Oh, it’s all about the characters. Without a doubt. You can be an amazing storyteller with a flair for plot, but if your characters are flat people will not identify with them. You have to show people themselves in every character, and that means digging deep within yourself and getting personal. It means putting yourself on the page in order to make fictional characters feel real.

Do you have any suggestions for beginning writers? If so, what are they?
Never let someone convince you to change your voice. As a writer, your unique perspective is unlike anyone else’s. You may have a similar style to someone else, but voice is unique to its owner. You have something to offer the world that no one else does. Stay true to that.

Do you have a milestone birthday coming up? If so, how are you approaching it?
Next year (2016) I’ll turn 30. I’m actually very excited about that. At 18 I thought I knew who I was. Don’t we all? LOL! Over the years I’ve grown so much and I feel that now, nearing the age of 30, I have a far better idea of the kind of person I am, the kind of person I want to be, and the kind of people I want in my life. I’ve been a published author for 3 years, and it’s my dream career. A lot of people reach 30 without having figured that out. So, I think I have a lot to be grateful for, and look forward to in my 30s.

What are the most important attributes for remaining sane as a writer?
It takes a lot of discipline. I think a lot of people think writers just mope around wearing their pajamas and drinking coffee, waiting for inspiration to strike. It’s not that simple. It takes discipline and concentration. Yes, writing is an art, but it’s also something you have to practice in order to improve. It also takes a thick skin, especially if you want to be published. You have to know how to take and handle criticism … and it’s not always constructive or nicely stated. You also have to be open to change and the unexpected.

Have any of your characters been modeled after yourself?
I never model one character completely after myself, but I do like to sprinkle little bits of myself into all of them. It makes it easier for me to write them, because then I can identify with them each on some level of understanding.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

Having people read my books, then come tell me that they loved them.

All it takes is a spark…

Blythe Sol never would have thought she would become the face of the Restoration Resistance. Yet, that is just what has happened now that the battle lines have been drawn. With the movement sweeping the United States, the stakes are higher than ever as President Drummond continues to prove his dedication to the destruction of the Bionics and all who stand with them.

The flame has been ignited…

As anger and frustration among the American people reaches the boiling point, citizens begin to fight back, many showing their support for the Bionics… despite the personal costs to themselves. As protests turn violent, and people who once cowered in silence begin to fight back, the government continues its practices that fly in the face of the very principles the nation was founded upon.
The time has come to revolt …

Despite the many losses it has sustained, the Resistance stands strong, leading America into revolution and onward toward change. With an unlikely, ragtag family of misfits at its forefront, the Resistance stands, while a girl who lost everything continues to fight for a future that was once impossible, but may now be within her reach.

Reality is crueler than my fantasy. In reality, the Restoration is very much alive and in counterpoint, so is the Resistance. The M.P.s will never see me as just a girl. They fear me, what I am, and what I have the potential to become. In reality, Dax is here daily, a continuous reminder of my flaws and inability to love anyone completely, the way they deserve. In the real world, Olivia and Jenica are shells of their former selves. The former has sunk into herself and retreated from the world; the other lashes out at it with all the venom and malice she possesses.

No matter how much I want to try to imagine an alternate reality where things happened differently, I am always snatched back to the present. No matter how fast or hard I run, I cannot outrun Gage. His absence is more tortuous than his presence, when I’d thought it would be the other way around. I thought that by sending him away, I would finally be able to put my turbulent feelings behind me. Foolishly, I assumed that without having to look into those gorgeous blue eyes of his, I would no longer be a slave to my emotions when it comes to him. By cutting him out of my life, I could stop feeling so damned much. I liked it better when I was numb, when nothing fazed me because I’d built my walls and fortified myself against it all.
