Scientists are the new rock stars. The infection has been contained for nearly three months, and the world is celebrating. But humans are still dying. Rebekah Taylor has seen it firsthand. Her husband was killed right in front of her by the very creatures that humans were told they no longer had to fear.

Rebekah is determined to find out who is responsible for the death of her husband and the obvious cover-up. Fueled with revenge, she begins to find answers that lead to one frightening conclusion. The apocalypse might be over, but the battles are just beginning.

4 Stars

From its gut-wrenching, terrifying start to its surprise ending this book never allowed my attention to lapse.  From the beginning, there is a feeling of wrongness, a sense that something is out-of-kilter in the new reality following the aftermath of the contagion that wiped out most of the world’s population. Humanity teetered upon the brink of extinction when at the ninth hour the scientists created an effective vaccine, so that mankind was given a second chance. The scientists became the highly-praised heroes of the thankful survivors

Now, though, some of the brightest survivors are being systematically murdered, and the cover-up seems fool-proof.  Rebekah wants revenge against those responsible for killing her husband, and is hell-bent on getting to the truth of the matter; her obsession makes her a target of an unscrupulous, powerful group intent on ensuring nothing disrupts its lofty agenda.

This book is the first in a planned series.  I found the conspiracy and depravity of a powerful few believable; especially in the wake of a world catastrophe. The characters are likable (or not); all became fully-fleshed in my mind’s eye.  I found the conspiratorial mystery fascinating, and I was as anxious as Rebekah to figure out what was really going on.   The book ended well but with enough questions remaining that I am eager to learn more in the next one.

This book was given to me by the author in exchange for my honest review.
