Hi Laurie, thanks for having me!
I’m happy to have you! So…Tell us about your current release.
Silent Oath is the sequel to my debut novel, Locked Within, which was released last year. The trilogy tells the story of Nathan Shepherd, a reborn, someone who can remember past lives and draw strength and knowledge from the memories.
In this book, Nathan works to assemble allies who can help him protect New York from the Council of Chains, who have ruled the city brutally for years. Along the way, he meets Elena DeSantis, a lost lover from past lifetimes, and Athamar, an enemy who has hunted him from one incarnation to the next.
Do you listen to music while writing? If so what?
I do! I love music, especially film scores. I have days of music on my playlists, and whenever I write, I listen to various songs and film score tracks.
I often pick out certain songs to act as a book's soundtrack, and for Silent Oath I picked songs like Unbroken by Back Veil Brides, and It's All Coming Back To Me Now and Santa Fe by two of my favourite performers, Meat Loaf and Jon Bon Jovi, respectively.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A Ghostbuster. Seriously. I first saw that movie when I was 7 and for years after, it was all I wanted to do.
What group did you hang out with in high school?
I actually had very few friends in school. I hung out with a small group and we mostly kept to ourseves. I was never popular and didn't hang with any of the cool crowds.
What are you passionate about these days?
Writing, my wife, and my kids, first and foremost. After that comes my friends, gaming (we have a weekly tabletop roleplaying group), and film and music.
Describe what it’s like to be an author in three words.
Dream come true.
Entice us, what future projects are you considering?
I do have a few projects in mind.
With the final part of the Locked Within trilogy coming out next year, I kind of find myself back at square one. Obviously I have a solid relationship with my publisher now, but creatively, I have to start from scratch on a new series.
I have a few ideas in mind. One is a YA steampunk fantasy about a girl who fights back against a patriarchal empire to save her mother, another is an urban fantasy for adults about a police unit that deals with supernatural crimes, and the third is a superhero/crimefighter series inspired along the lines of The Count of Monte Christo.
Is there one passage in your book that you feel gets to the heart of your book and would encourage people to read it? If so, can you share it?
“Nathan pressed down on the accelerator. He felt the city call to him. Ten million souls crying out in the night. Their city. His city.
His father’s words echoed in his mind.
You’ll always have New York.
War would come. Morrigan and the Council would see to that. Athamar would inflict every pain he knew how on Nathan. But now there would be no more hiding. No more waiting in the shadows for a lone vampire to walk by. No more hoping that his actions went unnoticed. Now there would be war, and the conclave would carry the banner of the city into battle, with Nathan leading from the front.
Let them come.”

Hope has returned to New York City. Nathan Shepherd leads a small band of dedicated fighters against the Council of Chains and the city's supernatural masters. But it's not enough. Because from the shadows of Nathan's former lives comes an old enemy, one who knows terrible secrets that Nathan has not yet remembered, secrets that could undo everything he has fought for.
Nathan's only chance to uncover the memories of his previous existence, and to conquer these new forces of evil, lies in Elena DeSantis. A woman he has fought beside in past lifetimes. A woman he has loved.
A child at heart who turned to writing and roleplaying games when there simply weren't enough action figures to play out the stories he wanted, Paul Anthony Shortt has been writing all his life. Growing up surrounded by music, film and theatre gave him a deep love of all forms of storytelling, each teaching him something new he could use. When not playing with the people in his head, he enjoys cooking and regular meet-ups with his gaming group.
Paul lives in Ireland with his wife Jen and their dogs, Pepper and Jasper. Their first child, Conor William Henry Shortt, was born on July 11th, 2011. He passed away three days later, but brought love and joy into their lives and those of their friends. The following year, Jen gave birth to twins, Amy and Erica.
Paul's first novel, Locked Within, was released on November 6th, 2012, by WiDo Publishing. Silent Oath is the second book in this urban fantasy trilogy.
