Wanderamid's Crystal Ball by I. V. Phillips: Interview and Excerpt

Hello!  Thanks for visiting today and giving us the chance to find out a bit about you and your debut book. So, let's begin.  :)  How did you start your writing career?

One day I just ran with my imagination and began inventing a cast of unforgettable characters in a non-existent world that eventually came to life on paper. How exciting that is! I couldn't write fast enough! It was a healing getaway for me, and still is! I have many more stories to share in the future.

Tell us about your next release.

I'm writing it now. I never wanted Wanderamid's Crystal Ball to end. It feels good to be back!

What do you do to unwind and relax?

That rarely happens! I am very busy promoting my fantasy novel and am currently writing another.

Do you have a favorite quote, quip, or saying? What is it?

I have a few of them! The one on the top of the list is 'Anything is possible as long as you have the passion'.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

The feeling is indescribable, really. When my words lead my readers into a place that I created from imagination and they tell me how they enjoyed it as much as I did, my heart fills with tremendous joy.

Is there a piece of advice that you have received that has really stuck with you? If so, what was it?

Yes. Always follow your passion, and never give up!

A devious young girl, Devilea, tricks Emera, the powerful witch of Wanderamid, stealing her crystal ball and sending her through to another dimension. For the past three years, Emera has been living as Ms. Biddock, the principal of Whilom Elementary.

On the last day of school, Emera crosses paths with Rena Winterton, a student, who soon after, discovers her hidden identity. To prevent Rena from revealing her long kept secret, Emera recites an incantation that will send Rena away on a quest to find the clear stone she believes can bring her home, Wanderamid's crystal ball. However, when the chosen spell emerges, Emera is surprised to see Rena already has it in her possession! Emera attempts to stop the spell, but her powers fail. It's too late! The summoning has begun and for Rena, an unexpected journey begins.

A never seen before portal embraces Rena and directs towards her future encounters, as she ventures into an unfamiliar world. In this world between many, curses, revenge and magic delay Rena's search for her intended destination, the entryway back to Whilom.

Rena would have rather been in between the crowded trees than in the middle of broken open space. She whispered anxiously to Avanna, “Are you ready to go?”
“I think so,” she answered in a quiet voice. “Walk with me, slowly.”
“OK, but when we’re half way there…start running!” Rena whispered strongly.
They began to walk carefully towards the forest when unexpectedly, they heard the sound of wings flapping along with a heavy swoosh that caused a strong brush of wind against their backs!
As they ducked, they saw each other’s troubled eyes and then hesitantly raised their heads, petrified what they would see. An indescribable creature blocked their view of the sky with its gigantic wings opened wide, circling above them!
“Hurry, It’s a pterodoc!" Avanna urged. "Run inside as fast as you can!”
Rena ran as fast as she could over the wide cracks beneath her, away from the monstrous sight resembling nothing she had ever seen! When she made it inside, she turned around quickly, only to find herself—alone. Avanna was not with her!
A fainting call for help came from where she stood moments before. It was Avanna, barely moving with the pterodoc headed her way! She stood in fear, watching helplessly as Rena ran towards her with the crystal ball held by her side.
“Avanna, grab my arm!” she hurriedly approached her, the pterodoc directly above them.
Avanna grabbed on to her with a weak grip and then they both ran just as it dived again with the tip of its mouth breathing inches over their heads!
“I’m sorry Rena, I’m too weak!”
“Don’t apologize…just keep running!” She anxiously pulled Avanna along with her.
They were only seconds away before finally entering Errantry forest. A powerful thump behind them caused their feet to lift off the ground. They shuttered to look back, but knew they had to and with each second, the pterodoc gradually came into full view. It snugged its head through the trees, but its shiny, wrinkled body was too large to enter, though it could have easily tried with little force. Its human-like eyes stared into theirs, as they stood motionless and frightened. One more breath of its scent would surely knock them over.
Just when they thought it might force its way to them, it slowly stepped back and then flapped its gigantic wings, lifting up and away, gliding into the cloudless sky from which it came. The once stench atmosphere, slowly became breathable again, however, before it did, Rena took a deep breath and became suddenly weak.
“I’m going to sit by that tree for a while. I think you should too," Avanna suggested when she noticed her not looking well.
“Yes…that’s a good idea,” she agreed.
Relieved the chase was over and the pterodoc gone, they rested against the uneven surface of a huge oak tree. The forest darkened with only a slight of sunlight passing through the branches with huge leaves that hung over their heads. They were exhausted from panic, and even though Avanna was the weakest, Rena’s eyes were the first to close.
