Hex and the Single Witch by Roxanne Rhoads: Interview: Bewitching Tour Stop

Hex and the Single Witch
Vehicle City Vampires Book One
By Roxanne Rhoads
Publisher: Bewitching Books
Genre: Paranormal Romance / Urban Fantasy
Word Count: 83,000

Anwyn Rose is descended from a long line of powerful witches yet she can barely cast spells young witchlings have mastered. She has one functioning witch gift, the power of knowing, which she puts to good use as a Detective on Flint’s Preternatural Investigation Team.

It’s a new era in Vehicle City, supernaturals are running the town.

The P.I.T has their hands full with paranormal crimes. Top priority is a serial killer, who appears to be a vampire, draining young women in the city.

Anwyn is on the case with her sexy partner Detective Mike Malone. Complicating things is her relationship Galen, a vampire who looks more guilty than innocent, although Anwyn trusts her instincts even if her power is on the fritz.

Mysterious spells, compromising situations, and a possible demon on the loose make it hard to focus on the case, but Anwyn has to make things right before the human police execute the wrong vampire.

Hex and the Single Witch contains magick, a little bit of mystery, a lot of supernatural mayhem, and a sexy love triangle that will leave you wanting more.

Hi Roxanne!  It’s awesome for me to get this chance to bug you with my questions!  Heheh! (like you don’t get enough from me as one of your hosts for Bewitching Tours!!)  So, I guess we better get started.

In Hex and the Single Witch most humans think that vampires, were-creatures and all types of Others are just movie magic and works of fiction because after a the Hysteria of the late twentieth century that almost eradicated entire species of Others, a mass worldwide spelling was cast that made humans once again lose their memories that Other folk exist. And the spelling was so successful that Others can walk openly among the humans and never be suspected of being Other.

The only people that see Others realistically are those who have the faintest drop of Other in their blood and those who are so strong willed the spelling didn’t take, and of course children who were born after the spelling took place.

The problem with this scenario is that not all Others are harmless, there are those thrive on danger, fear, and despair and revel in destruction.

So to keep the Others in line and keep supernatural crime to a minimum the Preternatural Investigation Team (dubbed the PIT Crew) was created as a special task force for the Flint Police Department.

Recruits for the PIT Crew are either Others or humans that know Others exist.

Detective Anwyn Rose is an Other, a witch to be precise but her magic hasn’t ever been too flashy, however she has the ability to “know” things. Either by touch or just a direct line into someone’s mind, Anwyn is very useful at a crime scene. She can see what happened just by touching the victim or an object at the scene.

Her partner, Detective Mike Malone is human, and not too friendly with the “monsters”. However he has a thing for Anwyn even if technically she could be labeled as one of the “monsters”, but Anwyn has a thing for a vampire, Galen. To Malone a vampire is the worst of all monsters especially when Anwyn’s love interest turns out to be the prime suspect in a string of killings they are investigated.

The whole situation leads to heated arguments, steamy encounters, a lot of misfiring magic- and a hot love triangle.

Book Two in the Vehicle City Vampires series will pick up right where book one leaves off.

Where do you research for your books?

Internet, library, real life, people watching…

What does your significant other and family think of your writing career?

He is my biggest fan. He tells everyone about my books, passes out bookmarks, business cards, and any other promo materials I may have on hand.

Does your significant other read your stuff?

Oh yes he reads it all.

Do you use a pen name? If so, how did you come up with it?

Yes, Rhoads is my maiden name and Roxanne sounded like a great semi-exotic name that went well with Rhoads.

How do you develop your plots and your characters? Do you use any set formula?

For the most part they develop themselves, especially the characters. They literally come to life as I write forming personalities on the page. They often surprise me.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be a writer, at least that is the one thing that was consistent. I also wanted to be a ballerina, an artist, a psychologist…the list goes on.

What are your favorite TV shows?

The Vampire Diaries, True Blood, Haven, Lost Girl, Dexter, Pretty Little Liars (I watch this with my daughter but it’s so addictive), Teen Wolf- those are just a few. My DVR is full of shows set to record. TV is my guilty pleasure. I watch it at night to unwind and to slow my brain down. It helps me stop thinking about work, story lines, characters…

What group did you hang out with in high school?

I was one of those kids that had their own little group. We weren’t jocks, nerds or anything, we just were. I kinda fit in everywhere and nowhere. I wasn’t smart in the right way for the “nerds”, I was too smart for the girlie “clique” and I didn’t play sports though I was invited to be a cheerleader by a coach and a couple girls on the team. I turned them down. I didn’t really hang with the “popular kids” though I belonged to all the same clubs and was on the Homecoming Queen ballot (I was just a few votes shy of making Homecoming court).

I guess you could say I was the in-between girl. The one residing in the grey area.

What are you passionate about these days?

My family. My job. Books. Definitely books.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

I watch TV at night with the family then once they go to bed I usually read for an hour or so. The distraction shuts my brain down to low instead of the overdrive it usually runs in.

What is it that you like to do when you’re not reading/writing?

I love to search for unique antiques and vintage items. I also garden and craft.

Are the names of the characters in your novels important?  How and why?

Oh yes, names are very important. I like names to represent the character. Either the meaning of the name has to fit the character or the region the name comes from. And with the older characters I try to find names that would have fit with the time period they were born in. I have stacks of baby name books I refer to when naming characters.

I also like names that are unique. Something you wouldn’t find in a lot fo other books.

What hobbies do you actively pursue?

Gardening, crafting, antiquing

Morning Person? Or Night Person? How do you know?

Night. I have always been a night owl. Mornings and me…well we don’t get along. At all.

Have any of your characters been modeled after yourself?

Oh I think every author puts a little of themselves into the characters. How can we not? But yes a couple of my characters have a lot of the same traits I do and similar backgrounds. Anwyn and I share a similar background- father passed away, raised by mom and grandmother…we share some personality traits too but she also shares traits of some of my friends and then has heavy doses of pure fiction thrown in.

I think book characters are Frankensteined bits of the author, everyone they know, and their life experiences all blended with imagination.

You just won a huge lottery what is the first thing you'll buy?

A large piece of land to build my dream home on.

I'm planning on three main books with Anwyn's story line, then a book for Mel and a book for Satinka, maybe more after that.

I am working on book 2 now.
