6 Things to Expect from the Shifty Magic Series

1.    Expect action. Getting bored does not equal being entertained. I like to keep my stories moving at lightning speed.

An explosion of movement from the woods skimmed across my skin and I dove for the ground, rolling as I fired. The bullet from the Glock grazed the gray wolf’s shoulder as he sprang at me, and I jumped to my feet. I backpedaled to give myself more maneuvering room as his paws hit the trunk of the tree above my prisoners and he pushed off, landing on the path in front of them.

2.    Expect to feel stuff. Living a character’s life with them is fun because it’s different from the stable, normal lives most of us have. And that’s a good thing. Drama in the book, not in the life is my motto.

I felt Cooper’s urge to rip her apart roar through him, and the core of energy in the center of my chest flared, sending whispers of the first stage of a shift tingling across my skin. His gaze locked with mine as the edges of my vision softened to white. I grit my teeth and fought for control, trying to force the energy of the shift into the ground like Cooper had taught me, but the sweet pull called to me.

3.    Expect to be surprised. Wouldn’t want you nodding off halfway through.

No examples. Because then it wouldn’t be, well, you know…a surprise.

4.    Expect things to go wrong for the characters. They should have to work for their happiness just like the rest of us.

I got my arms under me and tried to push myself to my feet as blood soaked the fur behind Cooper’s ear and fear and anger clawed at me. A wave of nausea twisted through my stomach, and my arms buckled. Cooper’s head lolled back, giving Rosalind the second she needed to unhook the PRC from her belt and snap it around his neck.

He shuddered and collapsed and they jumped away from him, watching as he melted into light and reformed as a man. His back bowed in agony and the muscled chords of his neck stood out as he clenched his jaw.

5.    Expect the characters to make mistakes and misunderstand what’s happening to them. Because hanging around perfect people is…actually, I don’t know any perfect people.

“You shouldn’t have kept staring at him.”

“I’m human,” I said. Kind of.

“If you’d dropped your gaze and groveled a little, his pride would’ve been saved and everything would be okay.”

“Then I guess it’s a fight, because I don’t do groveling.”

6.    Expect everything to turn out well in the end, even if it sometimes doesn’t in the right now. Because ultimately things work out, even in real life.

A future to be continued...

Savage Magic

A deadly disease from an unknown origin…

Addison Kittner and ex-FBI agent Cooper Daine arrive at Bone Clan expecting a warm welcome. Instead they’re imprisoned and placed under quarantine, where they discover that the werewolf mountain Clans are being decimated by a deadly plague which can’t be cured.

An old obligation that changes everything…

With only a few days to live, Cooper’s brother, Alpha of Bone Clan, asks Cooper to fulfill his promise, one that’s crucial to their Clan’s survival. But if he does, Cooper risks loosing Addison. Forever.

An ancient creature bred for genocide…

Determined to stop the plague and cure Cooper’s brother, Addison defies Clan law and sneaks away to an ancient ruin which might hold the key. There she discovers an unexpected link to her past and inadvertently calls forth an immortal monster that will destroy the paranormal races protecting humanity if it can’t be stopped.

But as Cooper and Addison battle to stop the annihilation of the Clans and the forces trying to tear their bond apart, something even more powerful and deadly gathers just out of sight…

And prepares to strike.

Cooper signaled for us to stop. In front of him, a line of animal skulls dangled from tree branches and clattered in the light breeze, marking the path. “I’m guessing we’re in Bone Clan territory now, right?” I commented.

Turning left and then right, Cooper pulled in several long breaths, testing the air. “Something's wrong."

As soon as he said it, a shiver swept up my back and my stomach knotted. That was the only warning I got.

One minute I was looking around for what in the hell was sneaking up on us, the next, three Weres slammed down on us, dropping from the trees and covered in mud.

My contraband Glock went flying, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw the biggest of them hit Cooper as I went down under the weight of what I guessed was a male — a young one, based on the high-pitched grunt of pain when I drove my elbow into his ribs. I rolled with the momentum of his weight as he bent into the hit and we tumbled across the leaves and rocks, fighting to get the upper hand.

We came to an abrupt stop with me straddling him, the heel of my right boot dug into the ground to stop our momentum and the sharp edge of my knife pressed against his throat. From under the shaggy bangs of his dark blonde hair, his yellow wolf eyes met my angry gaze, then slid down and focused on my chin.

“Nothing says ‘welcome to our home’ like an ambush,” I muttered.

Let me say how much fun this series has been to read.  I love the FAST pace, ACTION, and Character interactions.  The dialogue feels natural - it's sharp and often snarky.

Book 1 Shifty Magic
This is the book that started the series and introduced Addison, a kick-ass heroine who is scrappy and independent.  I knew from the first that this was going to be a fantastic read because the writing pulled me in right off the bat.  I loved the overall premise, and the romantic elements felt real.

Book 2 Undercover Magic
Addison and Cooper are targeted and Cooper is framed when their investigation sparks unexpected retribution.  Addison knows Cooper is innocent but when she tries to speak up about the injustice she become the focus of a powerful cabal intent on forcing her compliance. She must disappear in order to escape the clutches of an evil cartel determined to silence her, forever.

Once again fast action, and zippy dialogue along with a riveting story line kept me reading far into the night.

Book 3  Savage Magic
As a horrific plague runs rampant through the werewolf ranks, fingers point and passions ignite as the real culprits remain anonymous.  Addison and Cooper follow the meager leads but their investigation becomes stagnate even as the body count rises.

As this series unfolds Addison continues to evolve and gain confidence.  The passion she shares with Cooper feels just right and I love the way their relationship and trust in each other continues to grow.  The dystopian world they inhabit also continues to mesmerize and ensnare my imagination.  This is another exciting story line from the very talented Judy Teel.
