A Scholar’s Journey: The Divine Tempest by Herrick C. Erickson-Brigl: Interview: Promotional Book Tours

Tell us about your current release.

A quick synopsis:

When the God of Justice and Retribution releases a demon to wreak vengeance upon Therra, a young scholar, Penndarius, and his tormented warrior-protector, Soren, have just one day to stop the rising tide of terror before their world disappears.

The Divine Tempest is a fantasy book that is a treat for the action lover and the intellectual. I write with the philosophy that “A lot can happen in one day.” This constant pace really livens up the action and adds an element of tension that pushes the plot forward from moment to moment. It is tense, gripping, and a really fun ride.

What are your heroes and heroines of the story like?

I like the men and women of my books to be strong, indomitable, and fun!

Azlea the ashen is a fire magus. She wields an explosive staff of molten fire! Soren Luna Mortalitas is a hand to hand martial artist with a morbid past, haunting his every step. Penndarius is the green eyed avatar of the god of creation. He is smart, quick on his feet, and is disgusted by the evil of the world.

How do you develop your plots and your characters? Do you use any set formula?

I think about three things when I am sitting down to write a story.

1.      Who is the main character and how are they awesome!

2.      What is the overarching conflict/problem that needs to be solved?

3.      What kind of epic moments can I stick into the book?

Main characters need to satisfy a few key points.

1.      They have to be cool.

2.      They have to be able to do unusual things.

3.      They have to have a weakness.

4.      Their journey has to be epic-awesome.

Now here is the fun part: I come up with these things I’ve dubbed “Epic moments”. When you read these moments I want you to bite your fist and yell “damn!” at the top of your lungs. These are the most daring parts of my books.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned while writing your books?

I enjoy writing fight scenes! It is the product of my cinematic approach to writing that is coupled with 10 years of various martial arts and a serious love of action movies.  I’m the guy at the back of the theater rocking in his seat as he watches the good guy smash the bad guy through the floor with a round house right.

How do you describe your writing style?

Cinematic.  I hope you will see what I write in your mind’s eye.

Tell us about your next release.

My next release is titled “A War of Lies” it is a direct sequel to this book.

A Quick synopsis:

Three nations stand divided by a devil’s trick that will spark a war between the elder gods and their daemonic children. Penndarius and his protectors travel to the fertile land of Utopia to delve deeper into Therra's hidden past. But will the answers they find be what they are searching for or will they reveal something more sinister?

There is a kickstarter up to fund the editing of the second book:

What is it that you like to do when you’re not reading/writing?

Music is my muse. I listen to all manner of bands and they instill imagery into my head that a helps me to create the scenes in my book. My Spotify playlist is at 2000 songs or so. All of them help in one way or another.

Do you have any suggestions for beginning writers? If so, what are they?

Write write write! Do you have writer’s block? Write! It may be hard to get that initial five minutes down on the page but once you start, you won’t stop. Do you have problems coming up with ideas? Sit down and just start writing up what you think is cool! Who are your personal favorite characters? What made them tick? Why were they so much fun to read? Learn from them, grow from reading about them, and start writing!

A Scholar's Journey: The Divine Tempest

A Scholar's Journey The Divine TempestA Scholar’s Journey: The Divine Tempest is a no-holds-barred fantasy brawl. It begins when the God of Justice and Retribution opens The Abyss and unleashes a vengeful demon upon the mortal realm of Therra.

Now it is up to scholar Penndarius Greyson and his tormented protector, martial artist Soren Luna Mortalitas, to stop a crisis that would send shockwaves through the very fabric of creation. In addition, Penndarius is waging an internal battle with a disembodied presence attempting to possess his mind. The two heroes must avoid death or capture, but there is a catch: They have only one day to solve a riddle older than history before a dark host of unstoppable demons is released into the world.

The Divine Tempest includes warring factions, betrayal and redemption, and of course, Herrick Erickson-Brigl's trademark: epic fight scenes. This is the lean, hard-hitting first installment in a series that follows Penndarius’s growth as the avatar of the God of Creation and Soren’s reclamation of his lethal family’s humanity.
