The Watcher by Lisa Voisin: Character Interview and Excerpt

Interview with Michael Fontaine from The Watcher

Today, on my blog, we have an interview with Michael Fontaine, the lead romantic interest in Lisa Voisin’s THE WATCHER.

Michael is a mystery throughout the first half of the book, until circumstances force him to reveal his true nature to Mia, the main character.

Welcome, Michael.

Thank you.

What was the scariest moment of your life? Was it in this story?

You mean this life? It must have been the moment I saw Mia again.

Why? What was that like?

Terrible! I knew I’d have to face her again, someday. But everything that happened? It all came back. I wasn’t sure I was ready. In the end, I guess I was.

If you could apologize to someone in your past, who would it be?

Mia unquestionably, because I’ve done some terrible things. But there are others I wouldn’t mind apologizing to. In fact, I’d rather go back and just do things differently, but not even I can change the past.

Anything you want to elaborate on?

Not really.

Alright, let’s try some easier questions. What is your favorite meal?

Mia might tease me and say that it’s pizza, since I tend to grab it on the go. But that’s a snack. My favorite meal is prime rib with Yorkshire pudding. It’s probably my English background.

Where do you dream of traveling to and why?

That depends on whether you’re talking of dreams or nightmares! I’ve roamed most of the earth, and there are many beautiful places here, but nowhere on this earth is inaccessible to me. So I’d have to say I dream of heaven most of all.

If I came to visit early in the morning would you impress me as being more like a chirpy bird or a grumpy bear?

If I’d actually been asleep, I’d be more of a grumpy bear, but I don’t get much chance to sleep anymore.

What one word best describes you?

Before I saw Mia again, it was “contrite”.  Now, there are so many words… “resolute”, perhaps?

Do your friends think you are an introvert or an extrovert? Why?

I had an accident last year that really turned things around. Before I had it, I used to be quite an extrovert. But now, I keep to myself. My friends are still adjusting to me now. In a way, I am too.

Do you have any special routines or rituals?

I’m sure the way I live may seem like ritual to some, but it’s not. It’s wielding a very ancient force of power. Aside from that, it’s the usual. I’m just a ‘put one pant leg on at a time’ kind of guy.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I think they’d be surprised by a lot of things. How old I really am for one! Not to mention what I am or some of the things I do at night!

I’m sure they would be. You don’t talk much about what you are. Why is that?

Do you know that divot on your upper lip--the philtrum? Do you know why it's there?

No.

Before you were born, an angel pressed a finger to your lips so you would forget who you used to be, where you came from and what’s on the other side.

What I really am is part of that secret. I can’t tell anyone. I only told Mia, because she’d begun to remember it. She could see me. She always has.

I see….well, I guess we all have secrets…and it sounds like we need to really read The Watcher to find out why Mia is so different.

Thanks so much for spending time with us today.  It’s been great getting to find out a few things about you.

Millennia ago, he fell from heaven for her.

Can he face her without falling again?

Fascinated with ancient civilizations, seventeen-year-old Mia Crawford dreams of becoming an archaeologist. She also dreams of wings—soft and silent like snow—and somebody trying to steal them.

When a horrible creature appears out of thin air and attacks her, she knows Michael Fontaine is involved, though he claims to know nothing about it. Secretive and aloof, Michael evokes feelings in Mia that she doesn’t understand. Images of another time and place haunt her. She recognizes them—but not from any textbook.

In search of the truth, Mia discovers a past life of forbidden love, jealousy and revenge that tore an angel from Heaven and sent her to an early grave. Now that her soul has returned, does she have a chance at loving that angel again? Or will an age-old nemesis destroy them both?

Ancient history is only the beginning.

Instead of saying more, he brushed his fingertips along my cheek, and his halo glimmered. I could hear the waves slapping the rocks behind us, the wind driving them in. That same wind whipped against my skin, but the touch of his hand on my face was all I could think about. It sent a current through both of us and filled me with longing for something I wasn’t sure I understood.
“I’m sorry.” He stepped back and shoved his hands into his pockets as the light around him faded. “You don’t know what it’s like. Being near you now, remembering those moments we had…” His hair blew into his eyes, but this time he didn’t move. I wanted to brush it back, but I didn’t know how he’d react. Would touching him be bad?
“You want to know who you were?” he asked. “You may look different, but you’re the same. I look into your eyes and see you.” He took in a deep breath, fixing his attention on the horizon. I’d seen and heard so much now that the logical part of my brain had long since given up arguing with me. I could feel what he was saying was true. All of it.
