Book Description:
The year is 2017, and the Black Plague infection has swept across most of the United States, leaving death and chaos in its wake. Martial law is the rule rather than the exception, with outbreaks cropping up when they're least expected. Alyssa and her friends must not only battle outbreaks of the disease, but also find themselves pursued by government agents – men and women determined to track them down at any cost.
Fleeing north to the fabled Sanctuary, Alyssa, Jacob, DeAndre, Caitlyn, Risa and Luke face disturbing ordeals and terrible tragedy as they encounter unbelievable situations in their struggle to reach safety. Using their skills and wits in their fight to survive against ever worsening odds, they weather hardship, betrayal, and the ever-present specter of death as they flee north, all the while vowing to protect one another – and most of all their precious 5-year-old Luke, from a world gone mad.
Sanctuary, the second installment in the Mad World series, is a heart-rending adventure of astonishing revelations, tragic discoveries, agonizing separations and devastating losses that test these friends to their limits. With heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat suspense at every turn, this is a story you will not be able to put down.

MY Review
4 Stars
The adventure picks up a few years after the first book.  The disease continues, and has now spread world-wide.  I loved reading this because it felt like I was revisiting friends from the first book.  Luke is five years old and is a special hybrid child. Shadowy agents want to capture him, believing that his DNA may hold a cure for the plague ravaging the world.
As society disintegrates, the group learns of a possible sanctuary; a place of safety. Plans are set in place to travel.   The group must attempt the journey, but evading pursuit and capture by tenacious Government Agents proves more difficult than anyone could imagine.  There are plenty of obstacles, surprises and twists in this installment that kept me mesmerized to the very end.  This book ends with a cliff-hanger so I am anxious for the next installment to see what will happen next with the small band of survivors.
For me, this series is a relaxing read that does not require much from the reader except to be swept along in the adventure.  I found it very readable and enjoyed it.  I do think, given the extent of the catastrophe, that the day to day necessities of food, clean water, and power and fuel would be in extremely short supply (or rationed), yet these resources always seemed to be available when needed.  This second book built upon the ideas presented in the first book.  The characters and relationships becoming more complex just as the re-awakened virus is changing, mutating, and, so far, defying all attempts to  halt it’s deadly progress.  Concentrated efforts to contain the spread have managed to slow it down somewhat, but the prognosis for social and economic recovery is gloomy.  I am confident the third installment will build even more upon the ideas and conflicts presented earlier as we continue to venture through the landscape that is Madworld.  The installments are intended to be read in order.

4.5 Stars

Scientific curiosity unleashes an unstoppable virus upon an unsuspecting populace with devastating results.  A small group of friends are far from home when the disaster occurs but make a harrowing journey in order to return to their families.

The horrific consequences of scientific discovery gone awry provide a plausible and scary premise for this new series.  After reading the blurb I was intrigued, and knew I wanted to read Epidemic as soon as possible.  I must say I was not disappointed.  From the sketchy information and conflicting reports coming out the infected area in the early hours of the tragedy, to the disheartening realization that the ghastly disease will not be easily defeated or even contained, I felt like I was there with the small group of friends as they struggled to come to terms with their new, unpleasant reality.

The book starts of well and rapidly gathers steam as the protagonists attempt to make sense of the disaster and reunite with loved ones.  There are plenty of twists and lots of excitement as the story unfolds.   A quick read, I found myself increasingly drawn to the characters.  The book is a fantastical journey based upon a premise that seems not all that far-fetched.  I enjoyed it, thought the ending was spectacular, and I am eager to begin the next installment.
