Book Description:

One Man, Two Women, Two Gods...who will survive the Trickster's snare?

Ghostly images materialize in Nina Weaver's photos. Goons try to kidnap her. When her photographs are stolen and her best friend is shot, she realizes that she has no one to turn to but her ex-lover, Pascal ""Goofy"" Guzman. Together they go on a desperate road trip in search of answers. The truth is darker and more terrifying than Nina could ever have imagined. After their love re-ignites, they fall into the Trickster God's trap.
She stared at the photo on the gallery wall and silently swore. All semester ghostly images had marred her work. And now not only a strange inclusion ruined her photo, but the pin light needed to be repositioned as well. She found a ladder in the hallway supply closet. Balancing precariously on the top step, she noticed that the imperfection had changed into the image of a vehicle, and it was on fire. She could see the superheated air wavering up off of the flames. The crackling and sudden heat of a blaze forced her to lift a hand to guard her face. It was going to explode. She was quite sure of it. And then she was falling backwards, falling down…

World Building in Chasing the Trickster
by April Grey

The world building in Chasing the Trickster was based on making my characters' world as close as possible to our own and then to add a few tweaks. These tweaks were that pagan gods and their powers exist, though basically unseen by this world. I prefer the genres of Horror, Dark Fiction and Urban Fantasy in general because they usually present the reader with a recognizable universe which then when you turn over a rock reveals something uncanny.

I originally wanted to subtitle Chasing the Trickster as a romance of liminality. The liminal is an in-between state, standing on a threshold as it were. My characters are on the threshold of new lives and our main character finds that all was not as simple as she thought. Gods walk silently among us, feeding on us and needing us to believe in them. Humans create gods and nourish them, giving them their power over us. While subtle on some levels and obvious on others, Chasing the Trickster is a book of change and transformation. The differences are subtle at first and then profound.

This world, along with the liminal, contains Jungian elements. In Jungian theory the Trickster God, who is found in almost all cultures, represents humans who fail through their own hubris. My Trickster God considers himself a teacher of men, but these lessons are harsh ones. As his territory includes Las Vegas, the Trickster has almost unlimited powers as he feasts on the hopes of gamblers and players in his territory.

Cernunnos, an ancient Celtic god, is new to the game the Trickster plays. In his native Austria, his followers left him to become Christians. He is befriended by St. Nicholas and plays the role of Krampus (St. Nick's scary helper), accepting whatever crumbs of worship he can get once a year. By accident he occupies Pascal, an anthropology professor and devout Catholic, who returns to Santa Fe, New Mexico with the pagan god inside him. Cernunnos gains strength through people's carnal desire, but he is starved by his human host and is controlled by him. Cernunnos' gifts of healing are used selfishly by his host to insure the fertility and health of his host's family.

Nonetheless, just the presence of this god in Santa Fe has purified the air and water, leading the Trickster God to be enraged that another god has encroached on his land.

As the story unfolds the reader sees how this world is the same and yet worse than our own. Our own world already suffers from the ill effects of many chemicals released into the environment. The toxic influence of petrochemical residue, GMO's, mercury, and other biohazards are just beginning to be acknowledged as the cause of chronic illness and birth defects in humans and animals. In the world of Chasing the Trickster, pregnancy is very likely to result in miscarriage or the birth of a deformed child. This makes Cernunnos' power even more valuable.

Cernunnos has the ability to do much good, but is weakened by his lack of followers. Throughout the series Cernunnos will evolve through his and others mistakes.

We create what we imagine depending on our priorities. We get what we dream about: heaven or hell. The power is in our hands to devise a future worthy to be given to our children.

In light of Hurricane Sandy, it's been difficult to write this guest blog. Though I live in Manhattan, my family lives in the area that never lost electricity. We were unaffected by the storm except for losing a few days of work and school. However, many people have died and whole neighborhoods were destroyed by flood and fire on the east coast.

Yet again I am reminded of and humbled by the power of nature.

My hopes for the Cernunnos series are that readers become more mindful of the fact that we are a part of nature, and if we lose sight of that, we may lose everything.

April Grey's urban fantasy novel, Chasing The Trickster, is published by Eternal Press. Her short stories have been published in such print anthologies as Demonmind's Halloween 2010, The Best of Everyday Fiction 2, Northern Haunts, Ephemera and Terrible Beauty, Fearful Symmetry. Many of these stories can be found in her collection, The Fairy Cake Bake Shoppe available through Amazon and Smashwords.

She and her family live in Hell's Kitchen, NYC in a building next to a bedeviled garden. Gremlins, sprites or pixies, something mischievous, lurks therein. Someday she'll find out.

Writing for e-zines 13 SPOTS LEFT

April Grey. The best piece of advice I ever had as a budding novelist was to also write short pieces. The benefits of publishing short stories and/or non-fiction articles with e-zines (and other publications) are huge. You can make a name for yourself as a writer, create a platform, improve your craft and get paid by selling to e-zines. This course will teach the beginning writer how to research markets, evaluate their own work, write a cover letter/follow up query and track their stories. Students will sub... {more info}
