Genre Writing is Dead Serious
By MJ Preston [Author of THE EQUINOX]
Writing is something I have done my entire life. Though writing horror has always been a guilty and somewhat awkward pleasure. Yes, I said awkward, because when you tell people you are a genre writer they look at you differently.
Someone who writes about things that go bump in the night can't be taken seriously as a writer? Can they?
I think we most certainly can.
Words to write by: Be a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them—in order that the reader may see what they are made of.
I would love to take ownership of this wonderful quote, but it comes from the critically acclaimed and rather eccentric Kurt Vonnegut. It is also a motto I have followed my entire life as a writer.
My characters mean a great deal to me and by placing them in adverse situations not only does the reader find out what their made of, but so do I. Writing a horror novel only intensifies how your characters might respond to any given situation. What better way to find out how someone will act if they suffered a terrible loss, are betrayed by someone they trust, or even faced with an 8 foot monster intent on eating their lower intestinal tract. It can't get any more serious than that.
It is the job of the writer to give the reader a character they identify with. Given that burden, I have drawn on numerous experiences and thrust them upon the shoulders of my characters. How they react is dependent on what they are made of. By extension what I am really doing is giving you a piece of myself through my characters and putting my own vulnerabilities on show.
As a child I used to pull my feet under the covers and close my eyes tight for fear of seeing the axe man poised at the end of my bed ready to lop off both my feet, and thus thwarting any possibility of escape. The axe man is the boogeyman that hides under every child's bed or in that darkened corner we don't dare look.
Of course, we all want to look under the bed or into the darkness that so terrifies us, but often need a guiding hand to lead the way. That's what I am here for.
Don't be afraid, just take my hand.
I finished reading this book. I liked it. My review should be posted within the next several days.
MJ Preston- Author and Artist at Large
An ardent fan of the horror genre, he has been writing since he was a kid. In his early 20's he wrote film reviews for his hometown paper and while serving in the military he penned articles for more than few military newspapers.
In 1999 he founded the newsgroup Canadian Veterans'
In late 2009 he decided to dust off a half-finished manuscript he started well over a decade before. Originally written on an Olivetti typewriter the manuscript titled: THE EQUINOX came to life and was published in July of 2011.
Along with writing MJ Preston is also an artist using the computer as his canvas and creating digital art that is.. You guessed it, somewhat on the macabre side. From floating mystical orbs, to hungry intestinal eating ghouls, MJ Preston wields the virtual paintbrush of a proverbial madman.
He states, "I like to look at the darker side of human nature, pick at the things that bother us and see what lies beneath the surface."
Like a demented child, he waits excitedly for October 31st.
